Kevin Daniels , President
Mr. Daniels is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company's various west coast real estate holdings. His extensive background in real estate includes over three decades of experience in the areas of investment, development and property management in the Seattle area.
Alan Cornell , Senior Vice President
Mr. Cornell is Senior Vice President. His responsibilities include project management for all development projects, administration and finance. Alan has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of commercial real estate. His background includes corporate strategic planning, market research, and consulting. He has developed several suburban business parks and office buildings. Alan is a Washington State real estate broker and currently serves on the board of 4Culture.
Carl Shumaker , Vice President
Mr. Shumaker is Vice President of Construction and Facilities. He is responsible for the development and construction management of all projects. Mr. Shumaker has been involved in construction and facilities management of commercial real estate for nearly 25 years. Carl holds a General Contractors License, a Real Estate License and a RPA designation from BOMA International.
Angela Davis , Vice President
Ms. Davis is the Vice President of Property Management and Marketing. Her responsibilities include direct responsibility for the management of over 3,000,000 square feet of office, industrial and retail space, with a primary focus of maintaining the high standards the company consistently provides to its tenants. Ms. Davis manages all tenant relations, marketing, collateral materials, special events, advertising and public relations for the properties, as well as for the company. Angi is a Washington State real estate broker and currently serves on the board of the American Red Cross Seattle.

Charles Bagley Wright, III, Chairman
In eighteen years as Chairman of the R.D. Merrill Company, Charlie Wright has led the evolution of the private, family company. Under his leadership, Merrill Gardens, the company’s senior housing operator, grew from a single community to one of the nation’s largest providers of independent and assisted living. Merrill Gardens currently has 56 communities in ten states. The company recently entered into an $817 million dollar partnership with Health Care REIT that will allow for continued growth.
Along with the company’s long term timber holdings, the R.D. Merrill Company is focused on developing multi-family projects in urban cores in Washington and California. Under Wright’s leadership, the Merrill companies were honored as Washington Family Business of the Year three times this decade. Wright also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Seattle Art Museum.
William Pettit, President and Chief Operating Officer
William Pettit brings 18 years of banking industry experience to his role as President of the Merrill companies. Pettit joined the company in 1992 and has been instrumental in setting the course for both Merrill Gardens and RDM Properties. He directed the rapid growth and established the policies that showcase Merrill Gardens’ commitment to quality. Under Pettit’s leadership, the company is recognized as one of the top operators in the country.
Merrill Gardens is now one of the largest assisted living companies in the country and the largest in Washington State. With 56 communities in ten states, Merrill Gardens has 2,500 team members and the capacity to serve over 7,000 residents. Pettit is the Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of the American Seniors Housing Association.
DougSpear, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Doug Spear is responsible for all the financial practices of the Merrill companies. He oversees accounting, insurance, technology and finance matters impacting development, acquisitions and operations for RDM Properties and Merrill Gardens. Spear also leads the internal audit systems for the companies, ensuring a high level of quality at each property.
Prior to joining the Merrill companies, Spear spent 11 years in public accounting, including three years at Ernst and Young. Spear is a previously licensed C.P.A. in the State of Washington. He is also a member of the National Investment Council (NIC) owner/operator advisory board.
Billy Pettit, Vice President
Billy Pettit is responsible for the oversight of the development pipelines and asset management for the Merrill companies. Under his leadership, Merrill expects to develop 1600 apartments in the Puget Sound region over the next several years, while Merrill Gardens expects to continue its recent growth by adding an average of five properties per year.
Prior to joining the Merrill companies, Pettit was a Senior Associate at Hebert J. Sims & Company, a boutique investment bank focusing on the senior housing industry, where he worked on the private equity portfolio. Pettit also spent time working in Private Wealth Management for Merrill Lynch in Princeton, NJ. Pettit holds a B.A. in Economics from Hamilton College, and a MBA in Finance from the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Pettit is also a member of the Future Leaders Council of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing (NIC).
SODO Builders, Inc.
Gregory Steinhauer, Chief Operating Officer
Gregory Steinhauer is a graduate of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (1984) with a Bachelor of Science in economics. He has spent his entire working career in construction and real estate development. He currently directs all American Life large-scale development projects and oversees SODO Builders, the company's in-house construction company.
A lifelong resident of Seattle, Greg served as president of a construction and residential development company for 15 years that specialized in urban infill mid-rise projects. Just prior to joining American Life, he was vice president of development for a billion-dollar institutional real estate investment firm in which he was active in acquiring and entitling several projects.
Greg is an active board member of Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club. He and his wife are also active, longtime supporters of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Patrick Nickerson, Vice President
Patrick Nickerson brings a wealth of knowledge with over 34 years of professional construction expertise. He started his career in Baltimore as a Carpenter prior to relocating to the West Coast and is presently the Vice President for SODO Builders, LLC. His concentration has included commercial, custom built homes and mixed-use projects. He has been fortunate to have had many opportunities and vast experiences. The one thing he attributes to the many successes of his projects is incorporating team building with positive influences. As SODO Builders continues to grow and become a strong emphasis in the Seattle market, Patrick's strategic planning, constructability approach and corporate oversight contributes to the company's continued success.
Patrick's education included majoring in the Architectural/Engineering Design at UMBC. He served as an Episcopal Church Acolyte Director and Vestry Member. Patrick enjoyed coaching Mercer Island Baseball Little League. Throughout his life he has been affiliated with the Boy Scouts and while in California was the VP of the Northern California Wrestling Association.
Laszlo Gulyas, Controller
Laszlo Gulyas, emigrated from Hungary prior to the fall of communism. He received his BA from the University of Washington and completed his graduate studies at Seattle University. Recruited by Gregory Steinhauer in 2007, he managed American Life, Inc.'s conversion to an ERP platform and expanded IT infrastructure. He is now serving as Controller for Sodo Builders LLC and remains the director of IT and accounting consultant for American Life Inc. Supporter of a number of professional, scientific and cultural organizations, his main interests, are natural history, music and classic cars.
